Karen speaks of her early life as being born the youngest child to alcoholic parents. At a young age, she discovered the comforting effects of self-medicating with alcohol and drugs. Overcoming the fear that mental illness should not be discussed, she entered treatment in Meadow Creek at the age of 34. While receiving help herself, Karen demonstrated an ability to support her co-residents.
